  • Matthew 9:9 - As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man named Matthew (Levi) sitting in the tax collector’s booth; and He said to him, “Follow Me [as My disciple, accepting Me as your Master and Teacher and walking the same path of life that I walk].” And Matthew got up and followed Him.
  • Matthew 9:10 - Then as Jesus was reclining at the table in Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners [including non-observant Jews] came and ate with Him and His disciples.
  • Matthew 9:11 - When the Pharisees saw this, they asked His disciples, “Why does your Master eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
  • Matthew 9:12 - But when Jesus heard this, He said, “Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but [only] those who are sick.
  • Matthew 9:13 - Go and learn what this [Scripture] means: ‘I desire compassion [for those in distress], and not [animal] sacrifice,’ for I did not come to call [to repentance] the [self-proclaimed] righteous [who see no need to change], but sinners [those who recognize their sin and actively seek forgiveness].”
  • Luke 6:15 - and Matthew (Levi, the tax collector) and Thomas; and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot;
  • Matthew 4:19 - And He said to them, “ Follow Me [as My disciples, accepting Me as your Master and Teacher and walking the same path of life that I walk], and I will make you fishers of men.”
  • Matthew 4:20 - Immediately they left their nets and followed Him [becoming His disciples, believing and trusting in Him and following His example].
  • Matthew 4:21 - And going on [further] from there He noticed two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets; and He called them [to follow Him as His disciples].
  • Matthew 4:22 - Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him [becoming His disciples, believing and trusting in Him and following His example].
  • Luke 5:27 - After this Jesus went out and noticed a tax collector named Levi (Matthew) sitting at the tax booth; and He said to him, “Follow Me [as My disciple, accepting Me as your Master and Teacher and walking the same path of life that I walk].”
  • Luke 5:28 - And he left everything behind and got up and began to follow Jesus [as His disciple].
  • Luke 5:29 - Levi (Matthew) gave a great banquet for Him at his house; and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others who were reclining at the table with them.
  • Luke 5:30 - The Pharisees and their scribes [seeing those with whom He was associating] began murmuring in discontent to His disciples, asking, “Why are you eating and drinking with the tax collectors and sinners [including non-observant Jews]?”
  • Luke 5:31 - And Jesus replied to them, “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but [only] those who are sick.
  • Luke 5:32 - I did not come to call the [self-proclaimed] righteous [who see no need to repent], but sinners to repentance [to change their old way of thinking, to turn from sin and to seek God and His righteousness].”
