  • Mark 15:1 - Very early in the morning the leading priests, the elders, and the teachers of religious law—the entire high council —met to discuss their next step. They bound Jesus, led him away, and took him to Pilate, the Roman governor.

  • Mark 15:13 - They shouted back, “Crucify him!”
  • Mark 15:14 - “Why?” Pilate demanded. “What crime has he committed?” But the mob roared even louder, “Crucify him!”
  • Mark 15:15 - So to pacify the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to be crucified.
  • Mark 15:16 - The soldiers took Jesus into the courtyard of the governor’s headquarters (called the Praetorium) and called out the entire regiment.
  • Mark 15:17 - They dressed him in a purple robe, and they wove thorn branches into a crown and put it on his head.

  • Luke 23:18 - Then a mighty roar rose from the crowd, and with one voice they shouted, “Kill him, and release Barabbas to us!”
  • Luke 23:19 - (Barabbas was in prison for taking part in an insurrection in Jerusalem against the government, and for murder.)
  • Luke 23:20 - Pilate argued with them, because he wanted to release Jesus.
  • Luke 23:21 - But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
  • Luke 23:22 - For the third time he demanded, “Why? What crime has he committed? I have found no reason to sentence him to death. So I will have him flogged, and then I will release him.”
  • Luke 23:23 - But the mob shouted louder and louder, demanding that Jesus be crucified, and their voices prevailed.

  • Matthew 27:26 - So Pilate released Barabbas to them. He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to be crucified.

  • Luke 20:15 - So they dragged him out of the vineyard and murdered him. “What do you suppose the owner of the vineyard will do to them?” Jesus asked.
  • Luke 20:16 - “I’ll tell you—he will come and kill those farmers and lease the vineyard to others.” “How terrible that such a thing should ever happen,” his listeners protested.
  • Luke 20:17 - Jesus looked at them and said, “Then what does this Scripture mean? ‘The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.’
  • Luke 20:18 - Everyone who stumbles over that stone will be broken to pieces, and it will crush anyone it falls on.”
  • Luke 20:19 - The teachers of religious law and the leading priests wanted to arrest Jesus immediately because they realized he was telling the story against them—they were the wicked farmers. But they were afraid of the people’s reaction.
  • Mark 15:1 - Very early in the morning the leading priests, the elders, and the teachers of religious law—the entire high council —met to discuss their next step. They bound Jesus, led him away, and took him to Pilate, the Roman governor.
  • Mark 15:2 - Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus replied, “You have said it.”
  • Mark 15:3 - Then the leading priests kept accusing him of many crimes,
  • Mark 15:4 - and Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer them? What about all these charges they are bringing against you?”
  • Mark 15:5 - But Jesus said nothing, much to Pilate’s surprise.
  • Mark 15:6 - Now it was the governor’s custom each year during the Passover celebration to release one prisoner—anyone the people requested.
  • Mark 15:7 - One of the prisoners at that time was Barabbas, a revolutionary who had committed murder in an uprising.
  • Mark 15:8 - The crowd went to Pilate and asked him to release a prisoner as usual.
  • Mark 15:9 - “Would you like me to release to you this ‘King of the Jews’?” Pilate asked.
  • Mark 15:10 - (For he realized by now that the leading priests had arrested Jesus out of envy.)
  • Mark 15:11 - But at this point the leading priests stirred up the crowd to demand the release of Barabbas instead of Jesus.
  • Mark 15:12 - Pilate asked them, “Then what should I do with this man you call the king of the Jews?”
  • Mark 15:13 - They shouted back, “Crucify him!”
  • Mark 15:14 - “Why?” Pilate demanded. “What crime has he committed?” But the mob roared even louder, “Crucify him!”
  • Mark 15:15 - So to pacify the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to be crucified.
  • Mark 15:16 - The soldiers took Jesus into the courtyard of the governor’s headquarters (called the Praetorium) and called out the entire regiment.
  • Mark 15:17 - They dressed him in a purple robe, and they wove thorn branches into a crown and put it on his head.
  • Mark 15:18 - Then they saluted him and taunted, “Hail! King of the Jews!”
  • Mark 15:19 - And they struck him on the head with a reed stick, spit on him, and dropped to their knees in mock worship.
  • Mark 15:20 - When they were finally tired of mocking him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him again. Then they led him away to be crucified.
  • Mark 15:21 - A passerby named Simon, who was from Cyrene, was coming in from the countryside just then, and the soldiers forced him to carry Jesus’ cross. (Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus.)
  • Mark 15:22 - And they brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha (which means “Place of the Skull”).
  • Mark 15:23 - They offered him wine drugged with myrrh, but he refused it.
  • Mark 15:24 - Then the soldiers nailed him to the cross. They divided his clothes and threw dice to decide who would get each piece.
  • Mark 15:25 - It was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified him.
  • Mark 15:26 - A sign announced the charge against him. It read, “The King of the Jews.”
  • Mark 15:27 - Two revolutionaries were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left.
  • Job 15:14 - Can any mortal be pure? Can anyone born of a woman be just?
  • John 10:36 - why do you call it blasphemy when I say, ‘I am the Son of God’? After all, the Father set me apart and sent me into the world.
  • Job 25:4 - How can a mortal be innocent before God? Can anyone born of a woman be pure?
  • Isaiah 49:7 - The Lord, the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel, says to the one who is despised and rejected by the nations, to the one who is the servant of rulers: “Kings will stand at attention when you pass by. Princes will also bow low because of the Lord, the faithful one, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”
  • Matthew 2:13 - After the wise men were gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up! Flee to Egypt with the child and his mother,” the angel said. “Stay there until I tell you to return, because Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”
  • Matthew 2:14 - That night Joseph left for Egypt with the child and Mary, his mother,
  • Matthew 2:15 - and they stayed there until Herod’s death. This fulfilled what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: “I called my Son out of Egypt.”
  • Matthew 2:16 - Herod was furious when he realized that the wise men had outwitted him. He sent soldiers to kill all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, based on the wise men’s report of the star’s first appearance.
  • Luke 1:35 - The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God.
  • Psalms 2:2 - The kings of the earth prepare for battle; the rulers plot together against the Lord and against his anointed one.
  • Mark 14:43 - And immediately, even as Jesus said this, Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived with a crowd of men armed with swords and clubs. They had been sent by the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the elders.
  • Mark 14:44 - The traitor, Judas, had given them a prearranged signal: “You will know which one to arrest when I greet him with a kiss. Then you can take him away under guard.”
  • Mark 14:45 - As soon as they arrived, Judas walked up to Jesus. “Rabbi!” he exclaimed, and gave him the kiss.
  • Mark 14:46 - Then the others grabbed Jesus and arrested him.
  • Mark 14:47 - But one of the men with Jesus pulled out his sword and struck the high priest’s slave, slashing off his ear.
  • Mark 14:48 - Jesus asked them, “Am I some dangerous revolutionary, that you come with swords and clubs to arrest me?
  • Mark 14:49 - Why didn’t you arrest me in the Temple? I was there among you teaching every day. But these things are happening to fulfill what the Scriptures say about me.”
  • Mark 14:50 - Then all his disciples deserted him and ran away.
  • Mark 14:51 - One young man following behind was clothed only in a long linen shirt. When the mob tried to grab him,
  • Mark 14:52 - he slipped out of his shirt and ran away naked.
  • Mark 14:53 - They took Jesus to the high priest’s home where the leading priests, the elders, and the teachers of religious law had gathered.
  • Mark 14:54 - Meanwhile, Peter followed him at a distance and went right into the high priest’s courtyard. There he sat with the guards, warming himself by the fire.
  • Mark 14:55 - Inside, the leading priests and the entire high council were trying to find evidence against Jesus, so they could put him to death. But they couldn’t find any.
  • Mark 14:56 - Many false witnesses spoke against him, but they contradicted each other.
  • Mark 14:57 - Finally, some men stood up and gave this false testimony:
  • Mark 14:58 - “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this Temple made with human hands, and in three days I will build another, made without human hands.’”
  • Mark 14:59 - But even then they didn’t get their stories straight!
  • Mark 14:60 - Then the high priest stood up before the others and asked Jesus, “Well, aren’t you going to answer these charges? What do you have to say for yourself?”
  • Mark 14:61 - But Jesus was silent and made no reply. Then the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”
  • Mark 14:62 - Jesus said, “I Am. And you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven. ”
  • Mark 14:63 - Then the high priest tore his clothing to show his horror and said, “Why do we need other witnesses?
  • Mark 14:64 - You have all heard his blasphemy. What is your verdict?” “Guilty!” they all cried. “He deserves to die!”
  • Mark 14:65 - Then some of them began to spit at him, and they blindfolded him and beat him with their fists. “Prophesy to us,” they jeered. And the guards slapped him as they took him away.
  • Mark 10:33 - “Listen,” he said, “we’re going up to Jerusalem, where the Son of Man will be betrayed to the leading priests and the teachers of religious law. They will sentence him to die and hand him over to the Romans.
  • Matthew 26:59 - Inside, the leading priests and the entire high council were trying to find witnesses who would lie about Jesus, so they could put him to death.
  • Matthew 26:60 - But even though they found many who agreed to give false witness, they could not use anyone’s testimony. Finally, two men came forward
  • Matthew 26:61 - who declared, “This man said, ‘I am able to destroy the Temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”
  • Matthew 26:62 - Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Well, aren’t you going to answer these charges? What do you have to say for yourself?”
  • Matthew 26:63 - But Jesus remained silent. Then the high priest said to him, “I demand in the name of the living God—tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”
  • Matthew 26:64 - Jesus replied, “You have said it. And in the future you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
  • Matthew 26:65 - Then the high priest tore his clothing to show his horror and said, “Blasphemy! Why do we need other witnesses? You have all heard his blasphemy.
  • Matthew 26:66 - What is your verdict?” “Guilty!” they shouted. “He deserves to die!”
  • Matthew 26:67 - Then they began to spit in Jesus’ face and beat him with their fists. And some slapped him,
  • Matthew 26:68 - jeering, “Prophesy to us, you Messiah! Who hit you that time?”
  • Mark 15:31 - The leading priests and teachers of religious law also mocked Jesus. “He saved others,” they scoffed, “but he can’t save himself!
  • Job 14:4 - Who can bring purity out of an impure person? No one!
  • Luke 23:7 - When they said that he was, Pilate sent him to Herod Antipas, because Galilee was under Herod’s jurisdiction, and Herod happened to be in Jerusalem at the time.
  • Luke 23:8 - Herod was delighted at the opportunity to see Jesus, because he had heard about him and had been hoping for a long time to see him perform a miracle.
  • Luke 23:9 - He asked Jesus question after question, but Jesus refused to answer.
  • Luke 23:10 - Meanwhile, the leading priests and the teachers of religious law stood there shouting their accusations.
  • Luke 23:11 - Then Herod and his soldiers began mocking and ridiculing Jesus. Finally, they put a royal robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.
  • Luke 23:12 - (Herod and Pilate, who had been enemies before, became friends that day.)
  • Luke 23:13 - Then Pilate called together the leading priests and other religious leaders, along with the people,
  • Luke 23:14 - and he announced his verdict. “You brought this man to me, accusing him of leading a revolt. I have examined him thoroughly on this point in your presence and find him innocent.
  • Luke 23:15 - Herod came to the same conclusion and sent him back to us. Nothing this man has done calls for the death penalty.
  • Luke 23:16 - So I will have him flogged, and then I will release him.”
  • Luke 23:18 - Then a mighty roar rose from the crowd, and with one voice they shouted, “Kill him, and release Barabbas to us!”
  • Luke 23:19 - (Barabbas was in prison for taking part in an insurrection in Jerusalem against the government, and for murder.)
  • Luke 23:20 - Pilate argued with them, because he wanted to release Jesus.
  • Luke 23:21 - But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
  • Luke 23:22 - For the third time he demanded, “Why? What crime has he committed? I have found no reason to sentence him to death. So I will have him flogged, and then I will release him.”
  • Luke 23:23 - But the mob shouted louder and louder, demanding that Jesus be crucified, and their voices prevailed.
  • Luke 23:24 - So Pilate sentenced Jesus to die as they demanded.
  • Luke 23:25 - As they had requested, he released Barabbas, the man in prison for insurrection and murder. But he turned Jesus over to them to do as they wished.
  • Luke 23:26 - As they led Jesus away, a man named Simon, who was from Cyrene, happened to be coming in from the countryside. The soldiers seized him and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.
  • Luke 23:27 - A large crowd trailed behind, including many grief-stricken women.
  • Luke 23:28 - But Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, don’t weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.
  • Luke 23:29 - For the days are coming when they will say, ‘Fortunate indeed are the women who are childless, the wombs that have not borne a child and the breasts that have never nursed.’
  • Luke 23:30 - People will beg the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and plead with the hills, ‘Bury us.’
  • Luke 23:31 - For if these things are done when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry? ”
  • Luke 23:32 - Two others, both criminals, were led out to be executed with him.
  • Luke 23:33 - When they came to a place called The Skull, they nailed him to the cross. And the criminals were also crucified—one on his right and one on his left.
  • Luke 23:34 - Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.
  • Luke 23:35 - The crowd watched and the leaders scoffed. “He saved others,” they said, “let him save himself if he is really God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”
  • Luke 23:36 - The soldiers mocked him, too, by offering him a drink of sour wine.
  • Luke 23:37 - They called out to him, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!”
  • Luke 23:38 - A sign was fastened above him with these words: “This is the King of the Jews.”
  • John 19:34 - One of the soldiers, however, pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out.
  • Psalms 45:7 - You love justice and hate evil. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you, pouring out the oil of joy on you more than on anyone else.

  • John 18:23 - Jesus replied, “If I said anything wrong, you must prove it. But if I’m speaking the truth, why are you beating me?”
  • John 18:24 - Then Annas bound Jesus and sent him to Caiaphas, the high priest.
  • Psalms 2:6 - For the Lord declares, “I have placed my chosen king on the throne in Jerusalem, on my holy mountain.”
  • Mark 14:1 - It was now two days before Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The leading priests and the teachers of religious law were still looking for an opportunity to capture Jesus secretly and kill him.

  • Matthew 27:12 - But when the leading priests and the elders made their accusations against him, Jesus remained silent.
  • Matthew 27:13 - “Don’t you hear all these charges they are bringing against you?” Pilate demanded.
  • Matthew 27:14 - But Jesus made no response to any of the charges, much to the governor’s surprise.

  • Matthew 27:19 - Just then, as Pilate was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him this message: “Leave that innocent man alone. I suffered through a terrible nightmare about him last night.”
  • Matthew 27:20 - Meanwhile, the leading priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas to be released and for Jesus to be put to death.
  • Matthew 27:21 - So the governor asked again, “Which of these two do you want me to release to you?” The crowd shouted back, “Barabbas!”
  • Matthew 27:22 - Pilate responded, “Then what should I do with Jesus who is called the Messiah?” They shouted back, “Crucify him!”
  • Matthew 27:23 - “Why?” Pilate demanded. “What crime has he committed?” But the mob roared even louder, “Crucify him!”
  • Matthew 27:24 - Pilate saw that he wasn’t getting anywhere and that a riot was developing. So he sent for a bowl of water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood. The responsibility is yours!”
  • Matthew 27:25 - And all the people yelled back, “We will take responsibility for his death—we and our children!”
  • Matthew 27:26 - So Pilate released Barabbas to them. He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to be crucified.
  • Matthew 27:27 - Some of the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into their headquarters and called out the entire regiment.
