  • The Message - But we’re not going to start demanding now what we’ve always had a perfect right to. Our decision all along has been to put up with anything rather than to get in the way or detract from the Message of Christ. All I’m concerned with right now is that you not use our decision to take advantage of others, depriving them of what is rightly theirs. You know, don’t you, that it’s always been taken for granted that those who work in the Temple live off the proceeds of the Temple, and that those who offer sacrifices at the altar eat their meals from what has been sacrificed? Along the same lines, the Master directed that those who spread the Message be supported by those who believe the Message.

  • King James Version - If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.
  • New English Translation - If others receive this right from you, are we not more deserving? But we have not made use of this right. Instead we endure everything so that we may not be a hindrance to the gospel of Christ.

  • 1 Thessalonians 2:6 - nor did we seek honor from people, either from you or from others, though we could have asserted our authority as apostles of Christ.
  • 1 Thessalonians 2:7 - But we proved to be gentle among you. As a nursing mother tenderly cares for her own children,
  • 1 Thessalonians 2:8 - in the same way we had a fond affection for you and were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God, but also our own lives, because you had become very dear to us.
  • 1 Thessalonians 2:9 - For you recall, brothers and sisters, our labor and hardship: it was by working night and day so as not to be a burden to any of you, that we proclaimed to you the gospel of God.

  • 1 Corinthians 4:11 - Up to this present hour we are both hungry and thirsty, and are poorly clothed and roughly treated and homeless;
  • 1 Corinthians 4:12 - and we labor, working with our own hands; when we are verbally abused, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it;
  • 1 Corinthians 9:2 - If I am not an apostle to others, at least I am to you; for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.
  • Luke 11:52 - Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge; you yourselves did not enter, and you hindered those who were entering.”
  • 1 Corinthians 6:7 - Actually, then, it is already a defeat for you, that you have lawsuits with one another. Why not rather suffer the wrong? Why not rather be defrauded?
  • Romans 15:22 - For this reason I have often been prevented from coming to you;
  • 2 Corinthians 11:7 - Or did I commit a sin by humbling myself so that you might be exalted, because I preached the gospel of God to you without charge?
  • 2 Corinthians 11:8 - I robbed other churches by taking wages from them to serve you;
  • 2 Corinthians 11:9 - and when I was present with you and was in need, I was not a burden to anyone; for when the brothers came from Macedonia they fully supplied my need, and in everything I kept myself from being a burden to you, and will continue to do so.
  • 2 Corinthians 11:10 - As the truth of Christ is in me, this boasting of mine will not be stopped in the regions of Achaia.
  • 1 Corinthians 9:15 - But I have used none of these things. And I have not written these things so that it will be done so in my case; for it would be better for me to die than that. No one shall make my boast an empty one!
  • 2 Corinthians 11:12 - But what I am doing I will also continue to do, so that I may eliminate the opportunity from those who want an opportunity to be regarded just as we are in the matter about which they are boasting.
  • 1 Corinthians 9:18 - What, then, is my reward? That, when I preach the gospel, I may offer the gospel without charge, so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel.
