The Holy Spirit gave us new life.God poured out the Spirit on us freely. That’s because of what Jesus Christ our Savior has done.His grace made us right with God. So now we have received the hope of eternal life as God’s children.
• Galatians 5:4: Some of you are trying to be made right with God by obeying the law. You have been separated from Christ. You have fallen away from God’s grace.
• Galatians 3:10-13: All who depend on obeying the law are under a curse. It is written,“ May everyone who doesn’t continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law be under God’s curse.”( Deuteronomy 27:26)We know that no one who depends on the law is made right with God. This is because“ the one who is right with God will live by faith.”( Habakkuk 2:4)The law is not based on faith. In fact, it is just the opposite. It teaches that“ the person who does these things will live by them.”( Leviticus 18:5)Christ set us free from the curse of the law. He did it by becoming a curse for us. It is written,“ Everyone who is hung on a pole is under God’s curse.”( Deuteronomy 21:23)
• Psalms 143:2: Don’t take me to court and judge me, because in your eyes no living person does what is right.
• Romans 5:13: Before the law was given, sin was in the world. This is certainly true. But people are not judged for sin when there is no law.
• James 2:20-26: You foolish person! Do you want proof that faith without good deeds is useless?Our father Abraham offered his son Isaac on the altar. Wasn’t he considered to be right with God because of what he did?So you see that what he believed and what he did were working together. What he did made his faith complete.That is what Scripture means where it says,“ Abraham believed God. God accepted Abraham because he believed. So his faith made him right with God.”( Genesis 15:6) And that’s not all. God called Abraham his friend.So you see that a person is considered right with God by what they do. It doesn’t happen only because they believe.Didn’t God consider even Rahab the prostitute to be right with him? That’s because of what she did for the spies. She gave them a place to stay. Then she sent them off in a different direction.A person’s body without their spirit is dead. In the same way, faith without good deeds is dead.
• Romans 2:13: Hearing the law does not make a person right with God. People are considered to be right with God only when they obey the law.
• Psalms 130:3: Lord, suppose you kept a close watch on sins. Lord, who then wouldn’t be found guilty?
• Job 15:15: God doesn’t trust his holy angels. Even the heavens aren’t pure in his sight.
• James 2:9-10: But you sin if you don’t treat everyone the same. The law judges you because you have broken it.Suppose you keep the whole law but trip over just one part of it. Then you are guilty of breaking all of it.
• Job 25:4-5: How can human beings be right with God? How can mere people really be pure?Even the moon isn’t bright and the stars aren’t pure in God’s eyes.
