And David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.And the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David[ rather] sent his servants unto thee, to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?Wherefore Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle,[ even] to their buttocks, and sent them away.When they told[ it] unto David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed: and the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and[ then] return.And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Bethrehob, and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Maacah a thousand men, and of Ishtob twelve thousand men.And when David heard of[ it], he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entering in of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rehob, and Ishtob, and Maacah,[ were] by themselves in the field.When Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice[ men] of Israel, and put[ them] in array against the Syrians:And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother, that he might put[ them] in array against the children of Ammon.And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good.And Joab drew nigh, and the people that[ were] with him, unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, then fled they also before Abishai, and entered into the city. So Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel, they gathered themselves together.And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that[ were] beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer[ went] before them.And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew[ the men of] seven hundred chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there.And when all the kings[ that were] servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.

Moreover the Philistines had yet war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines: and David waxed faint.And Ishbibenob, which[ was] of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear[ weighed] three hundred[ shekels] of brass in weight, he being girded with a new[ sword], thought to have slain David.But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the light of Israel.And it came to pass after this, that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob: then Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Saph, which[ was] of the sons of the giant.And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew[ the brother of] Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear[ was] like a weaver’s beam.And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of[ great] stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant.And when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea the brother of David slew him.These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

Then came all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we[ are] thy bone and thy flesh.Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain over Israel.So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the LORD: and they anointed David king over Israel.David[ was] thirty years old when he began to reign,[ and] he reigned forty years.In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.And the king and his men went to Jerusalem unto the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land: which spake unto David, saying, Except thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in hither: thinking, David cannot come in hither.Nevertheless David took the strong hold of Zion: the same[ is] the city of David.And David said on that day, Whosoever getteth up to the gutter, and smiteth the Jebusites, and the lame and the blind,[ that are] hated of David’s soul,[ he shall be chief and captain]. Wherefore they said, The blind and the lame shall not come into the house.So David dwelt in the fort, and called it the city of David. And David built round about from Millo and inward.And David went on, and grew great, and the LORD God of hosts[ was] with him.And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and carpenters, and masons: and they built David an house.And David perceived that the LORD had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for his people Israel’s sake.And David took[ him] more concubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after he was come from Hebron: and there were yet sons and daughters born to David.And these[ be] the names of those that were born unto him in Jerusalem; Shammua, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon,Ibhar also, and Elishua, and Nepheg, and Japhia,And Elishama, and Eliada, and Eliphalet.But when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard[ of it], and went down to the hold.The Philistines also came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.And David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up to the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto David, Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hand.And David came to Baalperazim, and David smote them there, and said, The LORD hath broken forth upon mine enemies before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place Baalperazim.And there they left their images, and David and his men burned them.And the Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.And when David enquired of the LORD, he said, Thou shalt not go up;[ but] fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines.And David did so, as the LORD had commanded him; and smote the Philistines from Geba until thou come to Gazer.

And the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went.And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem.And from Betah, and from Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, king David took exceeding much brass.When Toi king of Hamath heard that David had smitten all the host of Hadadezer,Then Toi sent Joram his son unto king David, to salute him, and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer, and smitten him: for Hadadezer had wars with Toi. And[ Joram] brought with him vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and vessels of brass:Which also king David did dedicate unto the LORD, with the silver and gold that he had dedicated of all nations which he subdued;Of Syria, and of Moab, and of the children of Ammon, and of the Philistines, and of Amalek, and of the spoil of Hadadezer, son of Rehob, king of Zobah.And David gat[ him] a name when he returned from smiting of the Syrians in the valley of salt,[ being] eighteen thousand[ men].And he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom put he garrisons, and all they of Edom became David’s servants. And the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went.And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people.And Joab the son of Zeruiah[ was] over the host; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud[ was] recorder;And Zadok the son of Ahitub, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar,[ were] the priests; and Seraiah[ was] the scribe;And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada[ was over] both the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David’s sons were chief rulers.
