Not even a chain could hold him.His hands and feet had often been chained. But he tore the chains apart. And he broke the iron cuffs on his ankles. No one was strong enough to control him.Night and day he screamed among the tombs and in the hills. He cut himself with stones.When he saw Jesus a long way off, he ran to him. He fell on his knees in front of him.He shouted at the top of his voice,“ Jesus, Son of the Most High God, what do you want with me? Swear to God that you won’t hurt me!”This was because Jesus had said to him,“ Come out of this man, you evil spirit!”Then Jesus asked the demon,“ What is your name?”“ My name is Legion,” he replied.“ There are many of us.”And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.The demons begged Jesus,“ Send us among the pigs. Let us go into them.”Jesus allowed it. The evil spirits came out of the man and went into the pigs. There were about 2,000 pigs in the herd. The whole herd rushed down the steep bank. They ran into the lake and drowned.Those who were tending the pigs ran off. They told the people in the town and countryside what had happened. The people went out to see for themselves.Then they came to Jesus. They saw the man who had been controlled by many demons. He was sitting there. He was now dressed and thinking clearly. All this made the people afraid.Those who had seen it told them what had happened to the man. They told about the pigs as well.Then the people began to beg Jesus to leave their area.Jesus was getting into the boat. The man who had been controlled by demons begged to go with him.

But they went out and spread the news. They talked about him all over that area.While they were going out, another man was brought to Jesus. A demon controlled him, and he could not speak.

So he said,“ Why do you have evil thoughts in your hearts?Is it easier to say,‘ Your sins are forgiven’? Or to say,‘ Get up and walk’?But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he spoke to the man who could not walk.“ Get up,” he said.“ Take your mat and go home.”The man got up and went home.When the crowd saw this, they were filled with wonder. They praised God for giving that kind of authority to a human being.

The man’s hands and feet were chained, and he was kept under guard. But he had broken his chains. And then the demon had forced him to go out into lonely places in the countryside.Jesus asked him,“ What is your name?”“ Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him.And they begged Jesus again and again not to order them to go into the Abyss.A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs. And he allowed it.When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs. Then the herd rushed down the steep bank. They ran into the lake and drowned.Those who were tending the pigs saw what had happened. They ran off and reported it in the town and countryside.The people went out to see what had happened. Then they came to Jesus. They found the man who was now free of the demons. He was sitting at Jesus’ feet. He was dressed and thinking clearly. All this made the people afraid.Those who had seen it told the others how the man who had been controlled by demons was now healed.Then all the people who lived in the area of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them. They were filled with fear. So he got into the boat and left.
