  • Jeremiah 25:4-7

Do not make me angry by the things that you do. Then I will not cause you any harm.’So, now the LORD says,‘ You have not listened to me. But you have made me angry by the things that you have done. Thus you have brought harm on yourselves.’

  • Jeremiah 19:1-15
The LORD told Jeremiah,“ Go and buy a clay jar from a potter. Take with you some of the leaders of the people and some of the leaders of the priests.Go out to the part of the Hinnom Valley which is near the entrance of the Potsherd Gate. Announce there what I tell you.Say,‘ Listen to what the LORD says, you kings of Judah and citizens of Jerusalem! The LORD God of Israel who rules over all says,“ I will bring a disaster on this place that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it ring!I will do so because these people have rejected me and have defiled this place. They have offered sacrifices in it to other gods which neither they nor their ancestors nor the kings of Judah knew anything about. They have filled it with the blood of innocent children. They have built places here for worship of the god Baal so that they could sacrifice their children as burnt offerings to him in the fire. Such sacrifices are something I never commanded them to make! They are something I never told them to do! Indeed, such a thing never even entered my mind!So I, the LORD, say:“ The time will soon come that people will no longer call this place Topheth or the Hinnom Valley. But they will call this valley the Valley of Slaughter! In this place I will thwart the plans of the people of Judah and Jerusalem. I will deliver them over to the power of their enemies who are seeking to kill them. They will die by the sword at the hands of their enemies. I will make their dead bodies food for the birds and wild beasts to eat.I will make this city an object of horror, a thing to be hissed at. All who pass by it will be filled with horror and will hiss out their scorn because of all the disasters that have happened to it.I will reduce the people of this city to desperate straits during the siege imposed on it by their enemies who are seeking to kill them. I will make them so desperate that they will eat the flesh of their own sons and daughters and the flesh of one another.”’”The LORD continued,“ Now break the jar in front of those who have come here with you.Tell them the LORD who rules over all says,‘ I will do just as Jeremiah has done. I will smash this nation and this city as though it were a potter’s vessel which is broken beyond repair. The dead will be buried here in Topheth until there is no more room to bury them.’I, the LORD, say:‘ That is how I will deal with this city and its citizens. I will make it like Topheth. The houses in Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be defiled by dead bodies just like this place, Topheth. For they offered sacrifice to the stars and poured out drink offerings to other gods on the roofs of those houses.’”Then Jeremiah left Topheth where the LORD had sent him to give that prophecy. He went to the LORD’s temple and stood in its courtyard and called out to all the people.“ The LORD God of Israel who rules over all says,‘ I will soon bring on this city and all the towns surrounding it all the disaster I threatened to do to it. I will do so because they have stubbornly refused to pay any attention to what I have said!’”
  • Ezekiel 4:1-17
“ And you, son of man, take a brick and set it in front of you. Inscribe a city on it– Jerusalem.Lay siege to it! Build siege works against it. Erect a siege ramp against it! Post soldiers outside it and station battering rams around it.Then for your part take an iron frying pan and set it up as an iron wall between you and the city. Set your face toward it. It is to be under siege; you are to besiege it. This is a sign for the house of Israel.“ Also for your part lie on your left side and place the iniquity of the house of Israel on it. For the number of days you lie on your side you will bear their iniquity.I have determined that the number of the years of their iniquity are to be the number of days for you– 390 days. So bear the iniquity of the house of Israel.“ When you have completed these days, then lie down a second time, but on your right side, and bear the iniquity of the house of Judah 40 days– I have assigned one day for each year. You must turn your face toward the siege of Jerusalem with your arm bared and prophesy against it.Look here, I will tie you up with ropes, so you cannot turn from one side to the other until you complete the days of your siege.“ As for you, take wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet, and spelt, put them in a single container, and make food from them for yourself. For the same number of days that you lie on your side– 390 days– you will eat it.The food you eat will be eight ounces a day by weight; you must eat it at fixed times. And you must drink water by measure, a pint and a half; you must drink it at fixed times. And you must eat the food like you would a barley cake. You must bake it in front of them over a fire made with dried human excrement.”And the LORD said,“ This is how the people of Israel will eat their unclean food among the nations where I will banish them.”And I said,“ Ah, sovereign LORD, I have never been ceremonially defiled before. I have never eaten a carcass or an animal torn by wild beasts; from my youth up, unclean meat has never entered my mouth.”So he said to me,“ All right then, I will substitute cow’s manure instead of human excrement. You will cook your food over it.”Then he said to me,“ Son of man, I am about to remove the bread supply in Jerusalem. They will eat their bread ration anxiously, and they will drink their water ration in terrorbecause they will lack bread and water. Each one will be terrified, and they will rot for their iniquity.

Bury the shorts there in a crack in the rocks.”So I went and buried them at Perath as the LORD had ordered me to do.Many days later the LORD said to me,“ Go at once to Perath and get the shorts I ordered you to bury there.”So I went to Perath and dug up the shorts from the place where I had buried them. I found that they were ruined; they were good for nothing. Then the LORD said to me,“ I, the LORD, say:‘ This shows how I will ruin the highly exalted position in which Judah and Jerusalem take pride. These wicked people refuse to obey what I have said. They follow the stubborn inclinations of their own hearts and pay allegiance to other gods by worshiping and serving them. So they will become just like these linen shorts which are good for nothing. For,’ I say,‘ just as shorts cling tightly to a person’s body, so I bound the whole nation of Israel and the whole nation of Judah tightly to me.’ I intended for them to be my special people and to bring me fame, honor, and praise. But they would not obey me.

  • Jeremiah 18:2-12
“ Go down at once to the potter’s house. I will speak to you further there.”So I went down to the potter’s house and found him working at his wheel. Now and then there would be something wrong with the pot he was molding from the clay with his hands. So he would rework the clay into another kind of pot as he saw fit. Then the LORD said to me,“ I, the LORD, say:‘ O nation of Israel, can I not deal with you as this potter deals with the clay? In my hands, you, O nation of Israel, are just like the clay in this potter’s hand.’There are times, Jeremiah, when I threaten to uproot, tear down, and destroy a nation or kingdom. But if that nation I threatened stops doing wrong, I will cancel the destruction I intended to do to it.And there are times when I promise to build up and establish a nation or kingdom. But if that nation does what displeases me and does not obey me, then I will cancel the good I promised to do to it.So now, tell the people of Judah and the citizens of Jerusalem this: The LORD says,‘ I am preparing to bring disaster on you! I am making plans to punish you. So, every one of you, stop the evil things you have been doing. Correct the way you have been living and do what is right.’But they just keep saying,‘ We do not care what you say! We will do whatever we want to do! We will continue to behave wickedly and stubbornly!’”
  • Psalms 81:13
