Mark 1:1-12
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way.A voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way for the Lord; make his paths straight!John came baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.John wore a camel-hair garment with a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed,“ One who is more powerful than I am is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the strap of his sandals.I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John.As soon as he came up out of the water, he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven:“ You are my beloved Son; with you I am well-pleased.”Immediately the Spirit drove him into the wilderness.

John 3:28-36
You yourselves can testify that I said,‘ I am not the Messiah, but I’ve been sent ahead of him.’He who has the bride is the groom. But the groom’s friend, who stands by and listens for him, rejoices greatly at the groom’s voice. So this joy of mine is complete. He must increase, but I must decrease.”The one who comes from above is above all. The one who is from the earth is earthly and speaks in earthly terms. The one who comes from heaven is above all.He testifies to what he has seen and heard, and yet no one accepts his testimony. The one who has accepted his testimony has affirmed that God is true. For the one whom God sent speaks God’s words, since he gives the Spirit without measure. The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hands. The one who believes in the Son has eternal life, but the one who rejects the Son will not see life; instead, the wrath of God remains on him.

Matthew 21:25-32
Did John’s baptism come from heaven, or was it of human origin?” They discussed it among themselves,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will say to us,‘ Then why didn’t you believe him?’But if we say,‘ Of human origin,’ we’re afraid of the crowd, because everyone considers John to be a prophet.”So they answered Jesus,“ We don’t know.” And he said to them,“ Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.“ What do you think? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said,‘ My son, go work in the vineyard today.’“ He answered,‘ I don’t want to,’ but later he changed his mind and went. Then the man went to the other and said the same thing.‘ I will, sir,’ he answered, but he didn’t go.Which of the two did his father’s will?” They said,“ The first.” Jesus said to them,“ Truly I tell you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you.For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you didn’t believe him. Tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him; but you, when you saw it, didn’t even change your minds then and believe him.
